A visit to Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur (Tanjore)

When I think of Tamil Nadu, I think of the ancientness of its temples. Some, like the UNESCO World Heritage Shore Temple in Mammallapuram, are not used for daily worship. They are places to bear witness to the past. Calm and peaceful, they are thousand-year-old marvels of art and architecture. I especially like to go …

  • Our quest to learn about the lives of South Indian cooks and gather their recipes took us to the experimental community of Auroville – the City of Dawn, and an interview with Anandi Vaithialingam, the proprietor of the Satchitānandā Raw Vegan Restaurant, and Auroville Raw Food Centre.

Anandi's story recounts her journey as a cook, from girlhood where she was encouraged to memorize a large collection of recipes for her future role as a wife, to her education in spiritual nutrition in the U.S. at The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, and onward to her role as a raw vegan educator and champion at her Auroville restaurant. • We were fascinated that there is a place (and people) on this blue earth existing for the sole reason of promoting human unity. Twelve kilometres north of Puducherry is Auroville, an experimental community of sorts, founded in 1968 by two spritual leaders – Mirra Alfassa and Sri Aurobindo – and now composed of approximately 2,800 residents originating from 54 countries.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We made a brief visit there in 2014 before returning in 2016 for a better understanding of this unique place. Our goal was to go into the community and meet a few residents whose lives centred around growing and making food. Our blog post up now introduces you to two such people – Anandi Vaithialingam, proprietor of the Satchitānandā Raw Vegan Restaurant, and Krishna McKenzie, a music festival organizer and farmer using permaculture and natural farming methods, founder of Solitude Farm.

Please join us on the blog for a look into this fascinating place, its residents, and, of course, many delicious recipes to come. Link in our profile.

  • Grilled Banana and Sticky Rice Packets – Huge gratitude and credit to our friends Sumeet Nair @yummefy and Anita Goubert for sharing this flavourful recipe with us during our visit in Puducherry.

Enjoy the recipe straight up or with a scoop of whip cream or rum and butter ice cream. We think it would be great to make these ahead and pack them for a camping trip, to be roasted over the hot embers of a camp fire! A little Canadian spin on a sweet taste of Puducherry’s local South Indian Creole food. Recipe up on the blog now. Link in profile.

  • We'll never forget the day that we ate this chicken with our friends Sumeet and Anita in the garden of a lovely colonial home in Puducherry.

Surrounded by tropical flowers, in the shade of broad leafed trees, with cool stone under our feet, we savoured every flavourful morsel. How refreshing to take something as simple as roasting a chicken and give it this Franco-Indian Creole spin. Recipe up on the blog now. Link in profile.

  • There’s much to love about Puducherry. Called Pondicherry until 2006, it’s now fondly and mostly known as Pondi. The city was the French capital of India from 1674 to 1954 and as such is decidedly different than any other part of India. Up on the blog now is our Top 10 list of Pondi-esque things we hope you discover when you visit. Link in our profile.

  • Coming up on the blog we explore Puducherry (a.k.a. Pondicherry), and partake in an unique recipe testing session with chef Anita Goubert and chef/author Sumeet Nair – a.k.a. @yummefy – as they worked to document and preserve traditional Indo-French Creole recipes from the historic Puducherry area.
