Drinking Golden Milk in Mysuru was a first for us. We had never before tried this healthful and hearty elixir and were immediate converts. Imagine sipping a warm, frothy milk and enjoying a golden glow from the turmeric. Then, as you slip deeper into its depths, you discover hints of ginger, cinnamon, and pepper dancing across your palate. You can’t help but feel healthy all over. This is a completely caffeine-free beverage experience.

We enjoyed this first Golden Milk at Depth ‘N Green in Mysuru. Owner Pushpir Singh was really proud of it. After many attempts to emulate his perfect offering, we understand why.

It has taken us a few years to get our recipe to where it does justice to those first sips. We’ve played with different milks. We tried coconut oil as a base with various plant-based milks – soy, oat, almond. They all rendered a rather muddy mouth feel. Not pleasant at all. We tried coconut milk and found it too rich. We tried skim milk and found it wanting in its ability to absorb the spices.

Our favourites are whole cow’s milk or, if you are really lucky and can find it, water buffalo milk. So yummy!

It’s important to whisk the ground spices into just a little milk to start. Do this over medium heat. This helps the spices fully dissolve into the milk. And, we always strain the milk through a sieve as we pour it into awaiting cups. This again results in a better mouth feel while drinking your Golden Milk.

Let us know how you make out. We’d love to hear from you. Happy sipping.

Golden Milk Recipe

Yields
2 servings

Ingredients

Pinch black pepper

ΒΌ teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons ground turmeric

1 inch nob fresh ginger, peeled and grated

2 cups whole milk (or milk of your choice: water buffalo, oat, soy, almond*)

1 teaspoon honey or to taste – optional

*Note: if using a low fat milk, to create a smooth, lump-free drink, add 1 teaspoon of coconut milk to the pot with the spices and stir until smooth before adding your milk)

Method

  1. Measure the pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger into a small saucepan and add about 2 Tablespoons of the milk and whisk together until smooth over medium heat. Now, slowly whisk in the remaining milk.
  2. Bring to a slow simmer still on medium heat and once hot throughout, strain into 2 cups.
  3. Stir in the honey, if desired.

We'd love to hear from you.
